Case Study: Fractured Canine Tooth in a Cat

Meet Whiskers. Unfortunately, Whiskers was involved in a road traffic accident and managed to fracture his left upper canine tooth in the process. As the pulp (the 'live' part of the tooth) was involved, the tooth needed to be extracted as it would be painful and would likely lead to a tooth root abscess.
Whiskers’ was anaesthetised and a dental radiograph was taken, which confirmed that the tooth did need to be extracted. A local anaesthetic block was placed for added pain relief and the tooth was surgically extracted by creating a surgical flap - see the photos below.
As you can see the tooth has a large root and consequently can be a little tricky to remove. The wound was sutured closed. The procedure went as planned and Whiskers is recovering well.
