  • Have you noticed your dog scratching more than usual?

  • Do they nibble at certain parts of their body?

  • Have they developed any other symptoms such red skin, alopecia, sores or stained fur?

Most dogs scratch now and then, but excessive scratching indicates something is wrong. Itchy skin is a symptom of many different conditions.

Some of these conditions are

  • Fleas

  • Skin Allergies or Food Allergies

  • Mites and Lice

  • Infected skin due to an infection

  • An allergic reaction to something (e.g., washing powder, medicine, cleaning products)

  • Hot Spots

  • Wounds-these can be caused by the dog from scratching excessively

Fleas, mites and lice can all be treated with monthly parasite prevention. Please see ‘Coquet Pet Club ‘for more information or the flea’s article.

Symptoms of Itchy Skin

  • Alopecia (bald patches)

  • Pain - crying, whimpering

  • Self- Inflicted wounds - biting or scathing a lot can cause bleeding

  • Skin rash

  • Dark, thickened skin

Skin Allergies

A skin allergy is an oversensitivity to items such as pollen, grass, house dust mites or certain foods.

Always contact your vet if you think your dog is scratching or nibbling himself/herself more than normal. Itchy skin can be very uncomfortable and shouldn’t be ignored.
