What is the law on microchipping?

From April 2016 it was made law for all dogs over 8 weeks old in England and Wales to be microchipped and it is a requirement to keep contact details up to date. You can be fined up to £500 if your dog isn’t microchipped. Your pet must still wear a collar with an ID tag with your name and contact details when out in public.

All dog breeders are responsible for ensuring puppies are microchipped before selling them. Puppies cannot be sold until they are 8 weeks old and must be microchipped at the point of sale.

Breeders must also register their details on the database to be recorded against the microchip for the life of the dog. A person is considered to be a breeder if they are the owner of the dog that gives birth, whether or not they conduct breeding of dogs as a business.

Who can be microchipped?

We offer microchipping to dogs, cats and rabbits. You can have your pet microchipped from 8 weeks old.

How much is microchipping?

Microchipping costs £10 or it’s free if you're a Coquet Pet Club member.

What is a microchip?

A microchip is a very small electronic device. It is implanted under your pet’s skin normally in the scruff of the neck. Every chip is unique and has a 15-digit number. It is a very simple and quick procedure that our Qualified Veterinary Nurses and vets carry it out on a daily basis.

What are the benefits of microchipping?

  • Proof of ownership

  • Keep track of your pet if he or she wanders off.

  • If your pet ends up in a pet shelter they can get him or her back to you quickly.

  • In case your pet is lost or stolen your pet can be scanned and returned to you

  • Microchips last for your pet's lifetime, so all you have to do is keep your records up to date.
