Maddie is a 13-year-old Maine Coon who came in to see our vet, Rebecca, as part of our 'Geriatric Offer' that we are currently running for the month of April. Her owner’s said that she is not doing too badly at home, but she does have occasional fore limb lameness.
The month of April is our ‘Geriatric Month’, which is for dogs aged 7 years and older and cats aged 9 years and older. The offer consists of a 30-minute consult, including blood pressure, full bloods, and a urine test.
During the consult, our vet, Rebecca, gave Maddie a full clinical exam, collecting history from the owner and giving Maddie a full head-to-toe exam. Maddie had her blood pressure checked, which was in the normal range, and she had her bloods taken to check the function of her kidneys, liver, thyroid, and white and red blood cells.
Our vet, Rebecca, reported the bloods the next day. Maddie’s bloods were generally fab, so Rebecca had no concerns.
Due to Maddie being a bit stiff on her fore legs, Rebecca suspected that Maddie had started to get osteoarthritis, which is inflammation of the joint. Arthritis is very common in older pets, but it can be easily managed.
Rebecca advised Maddie’s owner to start Maddie on a monthly injection called Solensia. Solensia is a specific drug that alleviates osteoarthritis for an entire month.
We have seen great results with this medication, and we will continue to monitor Maddie’s progress over the next few months.
