Easter Dangers for Pets

As we move into Spring and get ready for the Easter holidays, it is important to be extra vigilant and aware of dangers for your pets. From chocolate and spring bulbs to lilies in your home, these items can make your pet very poorly and can even be fatal.

Here are some common foods and items that often result in an emergency trip to the vets:

  • Chocolate: The most obvious danger over the Easter period is chocolate. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is to your pets.

  • Raisins, sultanas, currants, and grapes: These can all cause fatal kidney failure in dogs.

  • Spring bulbs and plants: Certain plants can be poisonous to dogs, so be careful when they are digging up your garden. Hyacinths, daffodils, and tulips are just a few that can make your dog poorly.

  • Lilies: For cats, this flower is VERY poisonous. All they have to do is lick a lily plant, and they can get kidney damage. If you have cats, make sure you NEVER have lilies in your house or garden. It is not worth the risk.

If you think your pet has ingested any of these foods or items, please call us immediately. Even if they have only eaten one raisin, do not risk it. Do not wait 2-3 hours, as just because they look fine does not mean that they are.
