Everything you need to know about cat neutering

If you are a cat owner or looking to get a cat, you must not let your cat outside until they have been neutered. Sadly, we have seen a massive influx of pregnant cats in our local area, and the local cat charities are currently overrun with litters of kittens. Here’s what you need to know about cat pregnancies and why your cat should be kept indoors until they are neutered.

Both male and female cats can be neutered from six months of age. However, if they are desperate to go outside or if male cats are spraying in the house, they can be neutered earlier, from four months.

Cats can get pregnant from six months of age, and unlike dogs, they do not have seasons. This means they can get pregnant at any time of the year. Female cats can be impregnated by more than one male cat at the same time.

Cats are only pregnant for two months, and they normally have four to six kittens in each litter. It’s important to know that as soon as they have the kittens, they can get pregnant right away. This is another reason why we advise keeping your female or male cat indoors until they are neutered.

Throughout September, we are offering up to 15% off neutering. As part of this promotion, current clients of Coquet Vets will get 10% off full price neutering (cats or dogs). If you are a member of our Coquet Pet Club, you can get 10% off as part of your plan, and then a further 5% on top of this, giving you 15% off in total. For more on this promotion, see here.
