What should I keep in my First Aid Kit?

When you are out walking your dog, we advise you to carry a little first aid kit. Dogs can get ticks, can cut their paws, or can injure themselves at any time. Having a first aid kit can help with some of these cases. Some will need to be seen by a Veterinary Surgeon, such as cut paws, but you can bandage them to stop the bleeding before coming to us.

Items that we recommend you keep in a First Aid Kit:

  • Scissors

  • Non-adherent dressing or large plaster—goes directly over the wound

  • Padding or soft bandage—provides absorbency and cushioning

  • Conforming bandage—provides extra protection and holds padding in place

  • Cohesive material (Vet Wrap)—applies more protection and compression

  • Cotton buds—these are handy for little wounds to stop the bleeding

  • Sterile water—flushing out wounds or eyes

  • Tick remover

  • Gloves

  • Swabs—hold onto the wound to stop the bleeding

For your First Aid Kit, you can add in whatever you think would be of benefit, such as your dog’s medication, a muzzle, or an ice/heat pack. You can buy these products online, but if you were struggling, we do also sell them in practice.

We also hold First Aid Evenings where you will learn both theory and practical demonstrations on bandaging and CPR. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for our next event.
