Giardia and Egg Worm Count

Giardia is a protozoa parasite that can cause diarrhoea in your cat or dog. It is often picked up from contaminated water or other infected animals.

We now have an in-house test that can pick up this pathogen from a faecal sample in around 5 minutes. This means we can quickly detect if it is there or not during a consult and start a five-day course of treatment as soon as possible, if appropriate. We can also then easily retest after treatment to make sure we have eradicated the giardia and to check if any in-contact animals are infected and in need of treatment too.

In addition, we now offer faecal worm egg counts, where we examine faecal samples for worm eggs so we can decide if and when it is necessary to worm your dog or cat, rather than the routine twelve weekly worming which is generally recommended.
