Case Study: Tooth Root Abscess

Alfie is a 9 year old male entire poodle who presented to us as he was bleeding from the mouth. Alfie doesn't love to be examined, but from the clinical exam, our Vet Becca suspected that the bleeding was due to a tooth root abscess associated with Alfie's teeth.

Antibiotic and painkillers were prescribed, and Alfie was booked in to have a pre-operative blood screen, general anaesthetic, and complete oral health assessment.

Dental radiographs confirmed that Alfie not only had one tooth root abscess but two - one on each side associated with his upper molars. The abscess on the left side of his mouth had burst through the skin on his cheek, creating a large open wound and he had significant dental disease throughout his whole mouth.

The teeth associated with the abscesses were extracted, as were a few others that were past repair. The wound was cleaned and debrided and closed. The rest of the teeth were scaled and polished.

We are pleased to report that Alfie recovered well and a week later the wound on his face is healing nicely. His owner reports that he is so much happier (and smells better too).
